Recently, Windows Live Messenger (or MSN to most) came out with the Plus! upgrade. This upgrade came with the choice to lock messenger by pressing ctrl+Space. If this is your problem, please read this article.

IF YOU\'VE ALREADY LOCKED IT, THEN THERE SHOULD BE A NEW ICON IN YOUR SYSTEM TRAY. It's hard to notice it because it has nothing to do with messenger-- but that's the whole point! If you double-click the icon, you will be able to see your messenger again. 4
