How to Add a Mac to a Homegroup (with Pictures)

Windows 7 introduced a new feature that makes it extremely easy to share files across a network: the Homegroup. Unfortunately, the Homegroup is designed to work only with other computers also running Windows 7. This can make connecting computers with previous editions of Windows, Linux or Macs to Windows 7 needlessly difficult. There are, fortunately, ways around it.
STEPS

CREATE A WORKGROUP. Because Homegroups are limited to computers running Windows 7, trying to connect a Mac to one is usually pointless. Instead, creating a Workgroup will allow you to connect. Workgroups do not automatically enable as many features as Homegroups, but you can still achieve the same functionality through manual tweaking. To create a Workgroup:
Go to the computer running Windows 7. Click on the "Start Menu," right-click on "Computer" and select "Properties."


Go to the tab labeled "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" and click "Change Settings."


Go to "Computer Name" and click "Change."


A box should pop up named "Computer Name/Domain Changes." You will see the name of the Workgroup you are a member of or you can create a new one.

ADD YOUR MAC TO THE WINDOWS 7 WORKGROUP.
Go to the "System Preferences" pane and click on "Network."


Click on the "WINS" tab and make sure that the Workgroup name displayed is the same as the one you set up on your computer running Windows 7.

TO MAKE SURE YOUR MAC CAN SHARE FILES WITH WINDOWS, GO TO "SYSTEM PREFERENCES" AND CLICK ON "SHARING." Follow the interface to change permissions on the folders that you desire.

CONNECT YOUR MAC DIRECTLY TO YOUR PC. If you have several Windows 7 computers on a Homegroup and you need to connect your Mac to only one of them, there is another solution that doesn't involve changing from a Homegroup to a Workgroup.
Make sure you're on the Mac's desktop. Click on "Go" on the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select "Connect to Server" and type "smb://computersname" in the dialog box. Replace "computersname" with the name of your Windows computer (following the steps to create the Workgroup on Windows will also tell you your computer name).


When it asks for your username and password, type in your WINDOWS username and password. You should now be connected.


TIPS
Homegroups are exclusively designed for computers running Windows 7. That means that you cannot connect any computers running other operating systems to the Homegroup. This means that trying to figure out how to add a Mac to a Homegroup is just needlessly frustrating. The best thing to do is to follow the steps in this guide by creating a Workgroup or by directly connecting.
If you want to be able to conveniently move files from your Windows computer to your Mac, you need to configure the "Drop Box" folder on your Mac. Open the Finder, go to the "Public" folder and right-click on "Drop Box." Select "Get Info" and click on the lock button in the bottom right corner to change the settings. USE A SPUDGER TO GENTLY PRY THE CAMERA UP AND OUT OF ITS HOUSING IN THE REAR PANEL. The camera cannot be removed entirely yet because its connected to the bottom of the logic board.

USE A SPUDGER TO GENTLY PRY UP THE END OF THE LOGIC BOARD CLOSEST TO THE DOCK CONNECTOR. If the board won't lift up, double check to make sure all the screws securing the logic board have been removed.

BACKUP USING ITUNES. Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. Select your iPhone from the list in the left frame, in the Devices category. If you don’t have a menu on the left side of the iTunes window, use the Devices dropdown menu in the top-right of the window to select your phone. This will open the Device Summary page.
In the Backups section, click Back Up Now to start the backup process. The backup program will create a full image of your phone that can be used to restore the data and settings on a new device.

BACKUP USING ICLOUD. Open the Settings on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap iCloud. Select the Storage & Backup option. Slide the iCloud Backup switch to on. Your device will backup automatically the next time it is plugged, connected to a Wi-Fi signal, and has the screen turned off.
You can change what is backed up by clicking Manage Storage. In this screen you can see how large your backup file is, and you can toggle which Apps to backup.
METHOD 2 OF 3: RESET YOUR IPHONE

OPEN THE SETTINGS. This can be found on your Home screen. Tap the General button and scroll down to the bottom of the screen. Tap reset.

CHOOSE WHETHER TO KEEP OR DELETE YOUR DATA. Reset All Settings will delete your settings and preferences, but keep your music, photos, apps, and other data. The settings and preferences will be reset to the factory default. Erase All Content and Settings will delete all the data on the phone and reset all the settings and preferences. Everything added to the phone will be lost.

WAIT A FEW MINUTES. Depending on your reset choice, the process could take a few minutes. Once the reset is complete, the phone will act as if it had just been taken out of it’s packaging.
METHOD 3 OF 3: RESET YOUR IPHONE REMOTELY

MAKE SURE IT’S ACTUALLY LOST. If you reset your phone remotely, and then find it later, all of your settings and data will be gone. Be sure that you have actually lost your phone or had it stolen before performing a remote reset.
If you erase your phone remotely, you won’t be able to use the Find My iPhone function of iCloud. Be sure to try this before remotely erasing your phone.
You must have enabled Find My iPhone on your phone in order to be able to remotely erase it. You can do this in the iCloud menu in your Settings.

SIGN IN TO ICLOUD. You can do this from any web browser. Open the Find My iPhone page here. You will be prompted to log in with your Apple ID.

CLICK THE DEVICES BUTTON. It is located in the top-left corner of the window, next to the iCloud icon. Select your iPhone from the list of your devices. A window with your phone’s picture will appear with three options on the bottom.

CLICK ERASE IPHONE. You will be asked to enter your Apple ID and password to confirm. If the device is currently connected to the internet, it will begin erasing immediately. If it is not connected, it will begin erasing the next time that it has an internet connection.

CLICK THE BUTTON IMAGE YOU WANT TO REPRESENT YOUR MACRO, TYPE THE DISPLAY NAME YOU WANT IN THE DISPLAY NAME text box and click the OK button.
METHOD 3 OF 4: EXCEL 2010

MAKE SURE THE DEVELOPER TAB IS DISPLAYED. The Developer tab is a tab in the Ribbon at the top of Excel. If it is not displayed, follow these directions in order to display it:
Click File ? Options ? Customize Ribbons
Find the Developer check box in the Main Tabs section and click it. Press "OK" when you are done.

IN THE DEVELOPER TAB, CLICK ON THE BUTTON ICON. The Button icon is under the Controls group in the Developer tab and looks like a rectangular button.

PLACE YOUR BUTTON. Place your cursor where you'd like the button to go and drag to select the size of the button. You can make the button as small or as large as you'd like, given your needs.

ASSIGN A MACRO WHEN PROMPTED. Excel should automatically prompt you to assign a macro to your button after you finish placing it. Once you've selected your macro, click "OK."
If you are unfamiliar with what macros are or how to record them, read more. You should have a macro already built before you create the button.

FORMAT THE BUTTON. Right-click on the newly-created button and select "Format Control." Select Properties ? Don't move or size with cells ? OK. This helps you maintain the size and placement of your button. If you don't have this property chosen, your button size and placement will change if you have it add, delete, or move cells.

RENAME THE BUTTON. Change the text in the button to say whatever you'd like it to.

TIPS
Try using the 2003 method for Excel versions earlier than 2003.
Alternatively, you may add your macro button to an existing toolbar in versions 2003 and earlier.
If you prefer, it will let you assign a shortcut key in the dialog box. This can prevent wrist strain and save time.
WARNINGS
The user interface on versions earlier than 2003 may be different so the 2003 method may not be exactly the same for those versions.
If you want a different button image than what version 2007 offers, you will need to download additional software that specializes in modifying user interfaces for Microsoft Office.
